The trick is finding where the haze actually sits: outside, inside, or between the panes. Here’s how to tell the difference, and which problems a good cleaning can solve.
First, Find Out Where the Haze Sits
A simple test saves a lot of wasted effort with cloudy windows. Wipe a small spot on the inside with a clean, damp microfiber cloth. Then do the same on the outside. If the haze clears on one side, the film sits on that surface. However, if neither side clears, the problem lies between the panes. That points to a different issue entirely, which we cover below.
Hard Water Film: The Most Common Cause of Cloudy Windows
Sprinklers, rain runoff, and hose water all leave minerals behind when they dry. Over time, calcium and magnesium build into a white, chalky film. It usually shows up first on lower windows near lawns and garden beds. Ordinary glass cleaner will not remove it. Residue From Household Glass Cleaners
Many sprays leave a thin layer of soap or wax behind, especially when you use a lot. On interior glass, that residue also grabs cooking grease, smoke, and dust. As a result, cloudy windows can actually look worse the more often you spray them. For a better finish, wipe the glass with warm water and a drop of dish soap. Then dry it with a squeegee or lint-free microfiber cloth instead of paper towels.

Dirty Screens and Oxidized Frames
Sometimes the glass is fine, and the haze comes from what sits around it. In fact, many cloudy windows are simply clean panes behind dusty screens. Clogged mesh scatters light and makes the whole window look dull. Similarly, chalky oxidation on aluminum or vinyl frames can wash onto the glass after rain. So clean the screens gently with soapy water and a soft brush, and wash the frames at the same time.
Condensation From Indoor Humidity
Some cloudy windows are not dirty at all. Fog that comes and goes is usually condensation. It forms when warm, humid indoor air meets cold glass. That happens often during Chicago winters, especially in bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. Showers, cooking, and drying laundry all add moisture to the air.
In most homes, running exhaust fans and a dehumidifier solves the problem. According to the EPA’s guide to mold and moisture, indoor humidity should ideally stay between 30 and 50 percent. Keeping it in that range also protects window frames and sills from mold and rot.

Failed Seals: When Cloudy Windows Need Repair, Not Cleaning
If the haze sits between the panes, no amount of cleaning will fix it. Double-pane windows have a sealed space between the glass, filled with dry air or an insulating gas. Once that seal fails, humid air seeps in and leaves fog or white mineral streaks inside. In that case, call a window repair company to replace the glass unit. Fortunately, the existing frame can often stay in place, which keeps the cost down.
